issue was appearing on an ati 32-bit jaunty system. My current machine is an
nvidia 64-bit lucid system, and I cannot reproduce the problem with it.

Could you please boot with the boot option text so that gdm is not
started. Then please login into the text interface and run startx,
make synaptic crash your X and check if on the text terminal a error
message from X is visible that indicates what sort of problem is
I did not get synaptic to crash on search today, but did get it to crash
at the end of loading package list from the server. Generally I have
synapting crashing like that for a while on several occasions of user
interaction now. Other apps work fine. I attach my xorg.conf.
