I have had the same problem, but after installing virtualbox-ose-
guest-x11 as Felix proposed, it works again. I have also enabled 3D
acceleration in VirtualBox' settings for my virtual machine, but I don't
know if that is necessary.

Doesn't that mean this is not an Ubuntu bug, but more of a Virtualbox bug.

Using vbox guest additions 2.2.0 beta fixed the problem for me.
