i don't know if this will help you, but it helped me.
try running this command in a terminal - xinput set-button-map Logitech
USB Trackball 1 9 3 4 5 6 7 8 2 (i had to switch 9 and 2 ) to get the
left scroll button function
i'm guessing that anyone with a bit of python knowledge or some thing
Same here with Jaunty Beta(upgraded from Intrepid on 28 Mar). Same USB
ID.
This is reported by x.org upon insertion of device (Without added HAL policy
file):
