Care to test the latest Karmic 9.10 Alpha development release of Ubuntu.
ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .
You should be able to test suspend using a LiveCD. Please let us know

I am unable to reproduce the symptoms, although they have occurred a few
times: perhaps one out of 10 resumes. I'm not exactly sure what to look
for, but kern.log said this: (seemed appropriate to "cut")

Hrm, sounds like a kernel panic possibly. Is there anything in
/var/log/kern.log.0? Is this reproducible every time? Do you see
anything in your dmesg output after you resume but prior to the machine
locking up? Are you able to maybe ssh into the machine after it
freezes? Please let
