This is not a problem in the gnome-system-tools actually. It was already
reported a while ago in network-manager-applet, where it should belong.

Confirming, note that Auto eth0 is the default name, you can edit the
connection to set a more user friendly name. Ideally better defaults
should be picked like Ethernet Port 2.
