I had this problem right now.
I suspent my session while unplugged, slept (not a bug that ;-)), opened the
laptop while still unplugged and then, blackout.
At this moment:
* the Bluetooth LED was on
* the Wi-Fi LED was off
* the Hard Drive LED was off but the drive was activated, I could hear

"Is this really a failure?" Yes. Machine was plugged in at the time,
nothing untoward or unexpected happening.
"Did the machine break while going to sleep or waking up?" Suspending,
probably. Booted, suspended, resumed, all OK so far, suspended again,
