Oh, forgot to add: I'm using xfwm4 (XFCE's window manager), and
switching off the composite effects in the window manager (without
changing the xorg.conf) also resolves this problem for me.

Same deal here on my mobility radeon, XAA resolves the artifacts and
also make it go much much faster. Correct me if I'm wrong but surely
this is a problem with EXA if activationg XAA corrects all the problems.
