This also occurs to me, when I connect my TV to my laptop with the HDMI cable and start my computer, I'm forced in 1280xXXX resolution on my laptop's screen, and the TV gets the same low resolution while it can handle higher resolutions. The solution is, as Hadmut noted, to use xrandr, but I grew
