Your symptoms don't quite match, but please note that there are fairly
serious problems at the moment with i845 and i865 support (see bug
304871).
Did you try booting in single-user mode (without X)? If that works,
this bug should go to xserver-xorg-video-intel. If it doesn't, it

I'm sorry if I'm 1980's but virtual consoles to me mean the various
TTY screens (or VT1, VT2, ... as they have been called on some *nix
systems) accessible via Control-Alt-F1, F2, ... . I was trying to
convey that switching through the different screens I did not find any
error messages

I noticed you mentioned virtual machines. Are you running these
instances inside a VM, or when you mention the live instance, are you
booting the laptop straight from the livecd without any VM involvement?
