Sorry for the delay. I reopen this issue because the defect is still
visible (I'm using 8.04.1).
With the 3D desktop effect disabled:
- It's still happening with Gnome and KDE 3.x
- It's not happening with KDE 4.x
- On Xfce, it's happening only when dropping the icon!?

On my side I'm still able to reproduce the problem but only using the
desktop without any 3D effect. The glitch is smoother now but still
appears. Have a look at the newly attached file.
If I use the desktop effects everything works well.

you said that the issue is not specific to GNOME? I'm not really
convinced that's a nautilus issue, and not sure most users really notice
any issue there, could be nice to fix but that seems really low priority
and not something ubuntu has the ressources to work on at the moment

desktops...
