Hum, well no particular reason why it shouldn't be displaying some sort
of splash on shutdown. I haven't really paid that much attention to
what happens during shutdown to say one way or another, but if there is
a shutdown and -ati is preventing it's display, it sounds legit.

Don't know if it'll help - the card has DVI & Analog outputs, I'm using
the DVI but can easily swap if required.

Mind grabbing the Xorg.0.log.old? The Xorg.0.log gets regenerated each
restart so your previous one is from the wrong session.

I deleted Xorg.0.log, then shutdown and restarted. The attached Xorg.0.log is
what was created after that.
xorg.conf exists but is of size 0.

Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn`, and attach your
/var/log/Xorg.0.log file from after reproducing this issue. If you've
made any customizations to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as
well.
