work around:
1.installed the mini.iso for Ubuntu 8.04
2. when prompted to install packages, I skipped it and installed the minimal
install.
3. got to a prompt, logged in and installed the ubuntu desktop
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
4. edited the /etc/yaboot.conf and removed the following
