I had the same problem with my tx2500z, but solved it by adding i8042.reset to
the boot options
Maybe you could try that? (my kernel is 2.6.28-15-generic)

sorry, I wasn't fully clear. Suspend the machine, and the resume the
machine and see if it can be ping'd when resumed. If this works, then I
suspect it's a problem with the video driver

using ssh? If you can, than this may suggest a GPU/X lock up bug.

I used this script to try debug it:
