please convince upstream to make a release first. We can then build a
shared library based on that release. currently, there are only more or
less random cvs snapshots

I don't see how an unstable API makes this unfeasible. Perhaps it is
more taxing than maintaining a library that has a more stable interface,
but it is still feasible to provide such a package.
