Ctrl+Alt+Backspace X11 zapping is disabled by default in newer X.Org.
And you need to use Ctrl+Alt+F1 to switch consoles from X (Alt+F1
switches from text mode). In any case, VLC cannot crash X, unless there
is a bug in X. Since this affects mplayer too, it seems like a bug in
your XVideo driver.
I have the same problem, mplayer streaming stagevu or movie player while
running, trying the option fullscreen, the desktop blacksout and system
has to be shutdown, restrated.
Have swithed of the visual effect to none, lets me find how my system
behaves. It seems to be ok for now

Hello, I have the same problem, and a lag when I restore windows. Like
davidc says, the problem happens with any player. I have jaunty, and the
new ati 4770, so I had to install ati drivers from its web page(Catalyst
9.5), not from repositories. Is there any solution?

Update: Maybe not a problem with vlc... I just experienced similar
behaviour with mplayer... perhaps it's a compiz glitch?

get video to play!
