Ctrl+Alt+Backspace X11 zapping is disabled by default in newer X.Org. And you need to use Ctrl+Alt+F1 to switch consoles from X (Alt+F1 switches from text mode). In any case, VLC cannot crash X, unless there is a bug in X. Since this affects mplayer too, it seems like a bug in your XVideo driver.

I have the same problem, mplayer streaming stagevu or movie player while running, trying the option fullscreen, the desktop blacksout and system has to be shutdown, restrated. Have swithed of the visual effect to none, lets me find how my system behaves. It seems to be ok for now -- machine free
