Forgive me, may be because it is my ignorance but I uninstalled
libpoppler-glib4 and it automatically removed gimp inkscape and tracker tool.
So I installed it again but the problem remained. But it is interesting that my
tracker tool had also problems probably it is because od that libpoppler.
right, the log confirm that you installed a version without using the
packaging system and it's taking over the ubuntu build and breaking your
installation
" libpoppler-glib.so.4 => /usr/local/lib/libpoppler-glib.so.4
(0xb78b)"
clean that and it should be working correctly

could you run:
- $(which evince)

and copy the log there?
the issue is probably due to a local version installed taking over the
ubuntu one

You
that's really strange...
a google search for "undefined symbol: poppler_page_get_thumbnail_pixbuf"
returns nothing
and evince works fine for me on Jaunty...
the only other thing that comes to mind is user account settings: try
removing everything under ~/.gnome2/evince, and then try opening evinc
i did it even /usr/lib/evince directory was not there. and i installed
it again. still exact same problem.

try this: "sudo aptitude purge evince"
then check to see if /usr/lib/evince/1/backends/libpdfdocument.so is still
there. if it is, remove it
then install evince again...
