Hi,
adding this line in /lib/udev/rules.d/40-libsane.rules solve the problem for me:

Hi, i've this problem too with karmic, with a multifunction device epson
(scanner, printer, fax) DX9400F.
$ sane-find-scanner | grep 0x04b
found USB scanner (vendor=0x04b8, product=0x083a) at libusb:002:009
ls -la /dev/bus/usb/002/009
crw-rw-r-- 1 root root 189, 136 2009-09-05 15:35 /dev/bus/usb/

Looks like a problem with udev rules or something like that ???
sudo xsane works perfectly, don't know wich device file or anything it
uses.
