I'm having the same exact problem. Sound is stereo and comes from all speakers, but nothing changes when I run vlc --aout alsa --alsadev surround51. In windows, VLC plays the video perfectly with 5:1 sound. -- No 5.1 sound with Realtek ALC888 in jaunty 9.04 RC
