I guess you both haven't read the documentation. In ifupdown mode,
guessnet expects /etc/network/interfaces to be fed on its stdin. That's
why you think it hangs — as you haven't supplied any input to it.

Hi,
I have the same hardware as you (also a D630). I can confirm what you
have. Running Karmic. I do however have a working network setup. And I
never call guessnet directly.
But my interfaces file looks different, see
