Before I can connect to my VPN I also have to restart network manager.

it seems that network-manager needs a restart, when there are additional
plugins installed.
at least i had to when i installed:
network-manager-vpnc
network-manager-vpnc-gnome
vpnc
before i could login (same log messages as above).

I've got the same problem, but restarting network-manager (sudo
/etc/init.d/network-manager restart) also solved it.

Yes rebooting solved it.
Well, that should work straight after installing the network manager vpn
plugin
So seems to still be a bug.
