/apps/nautilus/preferences/show_desktop works correctly:
When deactivating it on a fresh desktop, te root window is drawable with
xsetroot. However it does not show anymore folder icons :-(
The /desktop/gnome/background/show_background has no effect.

the correct key is draw_background, not show_background, and it's used by
gnome-settings-daemon where /apps/nautilus/preferences/show_desktop is used
by nautilus.
To summarize:
- if you want no background displayed you have to set
/desktop/gnome/background/draw_background and
ok i confirm it works. So it is a feature request for nautilus to only
display icons without taking over the window. This issue can be closed.

are you sure than nautilus is not drawing the background? does it happen
without activating /apps/nautilus/preferences/show_desktop?

hello, i juste read http://bugzilla.gnome.org/attachment.cgi?id=64106 as
shown by Daniel Holbach but could not have time to test it.
However, what is surprising is that:
pref-wallpaper_enabled seems redundancy with prefs-enabled.
As far i as see those few lines, The maintainer of
Better move it to some other place or add a new user.
