I just installed Maverick, and this bug is still here: empathy uses
different status icons from the rest of the desktop. I think #490313 is
a slightly different bug though.

This *is* an empathy bug. The upstream devs just havent got to fix this
issue.
The user-* icons are to be used by all the apps. this is the new xdg
naming.

This is really a bug in gnome-icon-theme (and optionally also humanity-
icon-theme). They are missing these files:

16x16/status/emp
Why is this your mistake? I can still see the confusing icons in
empathy. I don't consider this as invalid.
Karmic received a beautiful new set of icons, why is Empathy still using
the old, "ugly" ones?
