These crashes are very similar to what I experienced installing the 9.04
LiveCD version of Ubuntu (or Xubuntu) on an Intel i440BX based Compaq
Armada E500 laptop (please see #399589). I do remember getting the error
message about IO-APIC resourse allocation failing on the one or two
occasions where
I solved my problem by upgrading the hardware.

Thanks for all your testing. Could you confirm this issue is still in
the latest -proposed kernel 2.6.28-14.46, which I suspect it is. Also
can you check the latest mainline kernel V2.6.28.10 [1], instructions

Just booted with 28-13 from proposed, same symptoms. So all 28-x kernels
fail, while 27-x work. From the boor messages the only that sticks out
is the 7.5xxx time message about IO-APIC resource allocation failing.

28-13 was not in Proposed yet so I tried 28-12 and it crashed & burned
same way. One new thing I noticed that around 7.x (i.e. before crashing)
kernel complained about not being able to assign IO-APIC resources. This
message does not show up when booting succesfully with 27-11.

It would be good to find out if this problem occurs in the latest kernel
in -proposed. Shortly there should be a -13 kernel in -proposed and it
would be good to wait for and test that one. Please see

enable and use -proposed.
