I have this problem in Mythbuntu 9.10. It seems to only occur after a
crash or power failure, however. If, after it comes back up, I power
down the system and then power it back up, the auto-login seems to start
working again. If I just let the system reboot, however, it goes to the
login screen
There seems to be two different problems described here:
1. Automatic login doesn't work, you see the normal login screen
2. Automatic login cause blank screen and restarting X is the only way out.
Let's keep this report to track problem 1, if you are one of the users
having problem 2 can you, if
Same issue here, enabling automatic login or timed login through
gdmsetup gives me a blank screen after booting. Restarting X brings me
back to the gdm login screen, and I can login from there.

For my case, automatic login never work. It only give me a blank screen,
not even gdm login screen. I have tried manually edited
/etc/gdm/gdm.conf but it did not work as well. I have to edit
/etc/gdm/gdm.conf-custom to remove automatic login in order to get gdm
login screen.
