Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: main-menu

I noticed a strange issue when updating an application manually by uninstalling
it and then reinstalling it.
The entry in the menu (unmodified and located in the /etc directory, as opposed
to modified overlays which end up in the home directory) which was present
beforehand, had become deselected and I had to click it several times in the
menu editor to get it to show up. This is some kind of bug either in the menu,
or the XDG subsystem. The package in question was the upgrade for VirtualBox
from 2.1 to 2.2 which required uninstalling 2.1 beforehand.
The way I would code this is to manually stat the following for modifications
each time the menu is opened:
/etc/xdg/menus/applications.menu
/etc/xdg/menus/settings.menu
~/.config/menus/applications.menu
~/.config/menus/settings.menu

Please take this bug seriously and don't mark it as invalid for whatever
reason. This is a usability issue which doesn't affect me as a technical
user, but could really throw a curb-ball to a newbie, so don't be
douchebags.
