Problem is gone with mainline kernel 2.6.34!
Could someone kindly pick this up and merge the latest radeon driver
into the Ubuntu 10.04 stock kernel line?
By going for a mainline kernel I have cut myself off from future security
updates (ureadahead stopped working as well).

Turns out to be reproducible; doesn't always happen, but frequently. I do like
this:
- start Google Earth, move to some 3D buildings and zoom in
- iconify Google Earth
- start Firefox, goto Google Maps
- sometimes the crash happens immediately, else play with Google Maps and/or

I have a similar issue with 10.04, ATI 4670 OSS drivers: while using Google
Earth, screen first turns black, then white with vertical black lines. Had to
power-cycle the machine to get out of this state.

Is this still an issue with Lucid? Could you please attach your

I also found a workaround: just turn off "View - Atmosphere". Then
Google Earth seems stable even while rendering many 3D buildings! See 3
comments above for some specs of my systems.
Without any success I tried GE 5.0 and 4.3, the latest drivers from
xorg-edgers and different values in xorg.conf
well, others are experiencing the problem, so I changed status to
confirmed, iamhimay seems to have found a way to avoid the problem.

Workaround:Now running a newer kernel. 2.6.29.3 is working fine.
Something in the radeon driver not interacting with GE5? Gotta find free
open source alternatives to GE, but to have user level programs crashing
the system is not good.

Google Earth crashes system in 9.04
https://bugs.launchpad.
Same behaviour since Jaunty 9.04 with:
- ATI Mobility X600 in a HP Compaq nx8220, and with
- ATI Mobility 9700 in an Acer 8000Lmi
Both running with the open-source "radeon" driver, since "fglrx" does
not work anymore.

** Description changed:
Using a fresh installation of 9.04 with ATI Mobility Radeon X1400, when
running Google Earth after 5-10sec, screen turns black and system
crashes. I need to reboot the computer with power button. Looks like to
be a graphics problem with the new ATI Open Source Drive
