The system was installed from the Jaunty release not any pre-releases.
System monitor indicates:
Release 9.04 (jaunty)
Kernel 2.6.28-13-generic
Gnome 2.26.1
I have upgraded to a new laptop now so can do any tests to help identify
the problem on the problematic machine.
