Upgraded to Lucid and did not experience this problem. Difficult to say
what the package was - probably typical mouse driver?

I do not have anything besides Karmic installed. However, I just tried
xubuntu 8.04 from a live cd and left click worked fine. So it appears to
be, at least partially, software dependent (at least to my naive eyes).

Does it work in Windows, or even another Linux flavour? At the end of
the day, electronics break. I think I may have read about this being a
known problem, but even if it's a 1 in 10,000 thing, then it looks like
we are those guys.

I think that there are at least two ways to do it. I went into "mouse"
in "system"=>"preferences", and on the "touchpad" tab there is a
checkbox labelled "enable touchpad", which I unchecked. I know it's
difficult to use the menus without left-click, but you can do it with a
combination of tab, alt

I'm experiencing a similar problem on my laptop. Its a lenovo thinkpad
t61. Left click randomly (random boot-ups) stops working. This affects
both on touch-pad and "mouse" button.
However, a few times I have booted from a live xbuntu cd (9.04), and

Shortly after upgrading to Jaunty (9.04) the left click on my laptop
stopped working. It worked for a few days, then failed, interestingly
enough. When Jaunty starts, it opens a drag-window, as if left is being
held down. Could that be the issue?
