This was unfortunately a config issue. I've updated the Ubuntu Kernel
Mode Setting wikipage under More information so that it explains why
mainline kernels can't be used out of the box to test KMS:

I notice the upstream bug got marked invalid due to inconsistent
configuration; should this be closed as well?
Also, fwiw, KMS issues that occur prior to gdm probably should be filed
against linux.
