I don't have the problem anymore in Lucid. The icon now goes away after
printing is complete. Feel free to reopen if you can reproduce it.

I have the same problem in Lucid. After printing, the icon becomes
transparent and remains visible. Hiding doesn't work.
@Ricardo Pérez López: I'm not using HPLIP. It is installed though, since
it's recommended by ubuntu-desktop.

I face the same issue: Sometimes the icon automatically disappears,
sometimes it doesn't. When it doesn't, the hide command does absolutely
nothing.
