In my case the problem is with the S3 Savage (xserver-xorg-video-
savage?) driver, so you can close this one and I'll hang on to some of
the other reports of the same problem, such as bug 71368, bug 117836,
bug 140644 and 158022.

As per the last comment, I'm marking this fixed.
If anyone still experiences this same problem with the released version
of Gutsy, feel free to reopen.

Could you please recheck it with Gutsy Final Live CD? In Gutsy i810
driver is deprecated and intel driver is used instead.

Still not fixed for me. When Xscreensaver tries to 'standby' after 10
minutes my screen backlight does not turn off - although I see an
interesting pattern which kinda looks like a grid of transistors in
bright white against the black background, so I suspect it is trying to
turn off.

The problem is present also using the failsafe terminal xsession. So
it's not gnome-related...

I have also this issue, using both dapper and edgy on an hp nx7400 and an Acer
5612wlmi (both with intel 950gma).
If I use vbesave dpms off the backlight goes off, with gnome-power-manager,
xset dpms force off, the backlighy remains on.
