I don't know about more stable, I've had experience with it when it wont work, then after installing the drivers in synaptic/term I am able to enable and disable them from the driver tool. I agree it should be more consistent and can only assume it will become more consistent in time. Did you get

At the top of your choose SystemAdministrationSynaptic. In Synaptic choose search, type Nvidia. Select Nvidia-glx-180. Allow it to use any other files it recommends. Click apply. After it installs, restart your computer. That should get you going. The terminal method would be #sudo apt-get
