I've installed the recently updated ati-driver-
installer-9-5-x86.x86_64.run and this problem is gone. Now, the screen
turns-off as expected.
So, this problem was originated from the previous ATI drivers, instead
from Ubuntu.
Indeed, as far as I know, Ubuntu 9.04 works like a Swiss clock
