Thanks for your commitment to solving my case.  You amaze me.

The output from lpstat -v is:
device for PSC-1400: hp:/usb/PSC_1400_series?serial=CN55OB717304BN

I am sure your advice about Dapper LPS is correct.  I am still trying to
get someone local to provide a copy for me to upgrade from Breezy.
The Dapper CD that I got mailed is only good for first install and
Ubuntu forum offers that solution.

Right now my HP Toolbox works for printing and scanning so that is
enough.  Fax and Image centre will probably be workable when I upgrade
to Dapper.
