I faced exactly the same problems on my G4 PowerMac as described in #8
above, (No user created during install and modifying the root password
while in recovery mode and my installation partition mounted at /, it
fails with an authentication token manipulation error.)...

I'm referrin to the Jaunty release. They just turn the iMac DV off.

Thomas: Hmm Curious. Both the alternate CD and the Desktop CD do no boot

I have seen this happening once on my iMac DV (400MHz G3 slot-loader). The user
account was not created, but I was able to create it manually when booting from
the alternate CD in rescue mode. I could then get a shell while using the
installed system as / and subsequently use adduser to create
Hello, I'm new to reporting bugs, but I know my way (a bit) around
linux.
I am on a old iMac g3 (slot-loading) and am reproducing the same problem
multiple times on fresh installations from the alternate PowerPC Ubuntu
install disk. I've been using the recovery mode on the alternate disk to
try
I don't know of any follow-ups on or solutions for this bug. There is,
however, a workaround: The desktop CD works just fine (and you can of
course manually add the user using a live cd). I know the live-CD is not
suitable for all kinds of installations, but at least it works...
Here's the thread
Okay, I think there's a fundamental communication problem here:
I installed Jaunty from the alternate CD and found I couldn't log in. I
couldn't even boot to a shell, so I fired up the old Hardy Live-CD which
allowed me to look at the problem on my internal hard drive which was
when I found that
I see, i'm very sorry for my mistake.
I think I can confirm this, if anyone disagrees, I encourage you to
change it :).
Cheers,

If you are booting live then I don't think there should be anything in
the home folder anyway.
This is only in fact a bug if you install it and have an empty Home
folder. (I think anyway).

The screenshot shows the contents of the home folder/passwd file on the

It says you are a Live Session User :/.
Which means perhaps you weren't automatically signed in?
I'm assuming you've tried logging out logging in again? If not then
please try it. If that doesn't work I will confirm this bug :).

Jaunty PPC alternate CD fails to create user
Hey!
Thanks for taking the time to file this bug report :).
I don't suppose a screenshot is possible? Of you creating the account
in the installer, and then one of the account being not there
afterwards.
If you can't take a screenshot, then you might be able to use a
phone/digital camera.
Hey Ben,
I'm currently trying to figure out a way to manually create the user
account from the 8.04 live CD but I'll post the requested screenshots.
The one attached shows the passwd file and the empty /home directory of
the freshly installed system.
cheers,
Klaus
