i had the same problem already for weeks...
First I've tried with mysql server 5.0
and then with 5.1 but none of them works..
I'll include the info...
here is the term.log

Apparmor is installed and active but i don't have the file
/etc/apparmor.d/usr.sbin.mysqld*
I included the my.cnf file
but the conf.d directory was empty
and here's a quick output of /var/lib/mysql
