Just ran into this same issue today, 9.04, current on patches. The blinkbox process "spins" and is not even killable by "-9". Killing gnome-screensaver parent process has no effect. Only solution it seems is to reboot as the X session never comes back. -- gnome-screensaver causes system hang http

My most humble apologies. The problem is NOT specific to gnome- screensaver. XScreensaver exhibits the same problem -- it just took a little longer. "Blank Screen" still works. Bouncing Cow appears to work on a short trial -- I'll leave it overnight to see if I can get it to fail as well. At the
