Apparently thats because the Xpress 200M is an old chipset (given their
specs page suggests Microsoft® Windows® Media Center Edition 2005) mine
is a/ pretty new, and b/ is based off the radeon HD3300 (780GX) chipset,
which is definitely newer than the 200M - it shouldnt affect me. Cheers

There's interesting discussion at

Radeon Xpress 200M is not support in fglrx for 9.04. Not sure it applies

Yeah it is enabled ... sorry I thought that was clear by the 'I am using
compiz' - my bad!
Will get back to you on the other things - one of the main issues is the
fact its so random as to when it kicks off, so it may be a while!

I can see the compiz is enabled, but is it also in use? That is, what is
selected when you click "System -> Preferences -> Apperance -> Visual
Effects"? If it /isn't/ None, please select "None" and report whether or
not this issue occurs with Visual Effect disabled. Thanks and regards,

Are you using compiz? The NVIDIA or ATI binary driver? Does this occur
if compiz is disabled? Does this occur if you use the standard Xorg
driver for your GPU?
