Binary package hint: update-manager

While upgrading from Jaunty to Karmic, I noticed that "Searching for
obsolete software" was taking a long time with a lot of hard disk
access.  Soon thereafter, I saw the window become unresponsive (no
progress bar updates, painted gray by compiz).

The log messages from this time period are:
