Using Ubuntu Feisty Fawn RC 20070415 here, fully upgraded.
As of Gaim 2.0.0 beta 6, this problem seems to be fixed, as the popup
window asks the user if he wants to apply the image as background image
or send it to the other peer, as you can see with the included
screenshot.

Yes! The current behavior just sucks. I've accidentally changed the
avatar picture of one of my buddies and there is no obvious way to undo
that. Drag-n-dropping an image should insert it into the conversation or
start transferring it when possible. When will this be fixed? Do these
bug reports go
When you drag an image to the conversation window, the place where the
buddy icon goes should expand so you have the option to drag it to
there.

I have tested this, and it is true that you cannot insert pictures (or
other files) over certain protocols, such as Jabber or MSN. However, you
can insert pictures (and only pictures) directly into the conversation
in other protocols such as AIM. I think that for protocols that support

It would only ask about setting an icon whenever file transfer isn't
supported. Is that not what we're hitting here? do we have a protocol
where file transfer is supported but it isn't asking which you want it
to do?

I have to agree that dragging an image, or indeed any file to the text
are means you want to send it. Dragging it to the icon area could mean
replace buddy icon with this one but seriously, how often do people
do that at all?
