Sound and everything used to be perfect in 9.04, upgraded to 9.10 and
started having some problems every now and then I'd get "Stream To
Large" and I'd have to restart my laptop so it'll be fixed. With recent
updates, sound has been killed off my laptop completely.

Just done that, to no avail. When I enter the sound control, the
Hardware tab is just blank (nothing detected) and the only output is
Dummy Audio.

Ditto here, had to re-enable use audio devices, also i had to run users-
admin from a terminal, since running it from the menu provides a result
that i do not have permission to run that app

My permissions got borked somehow. I fixed it by going into users and
groups and enabling audio for my user.
