Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg-driver-fglrx
Hi, I'm having significant difficulty getting my Radeon 4870 with the proprietary ATI driver. After enabling the restricted driver, when X started, my LCD panels reported "Frequency out of range". I was, however able to use the virtual terminals. Attempting to revert to "/etc/X11/xorg.conf.failsafe" or "sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver- xorg" resulted in graphical corruption, the inability to switch to a virtual terminal, and the inability to use ctrl-alt-del to reset the system. I had to reboot with alt+sysreq+reisub. I was able to recover by removing xorg-driver-fglrx with aptitude and reverting xorg.conf to the failsafe.
