Just noticed the following: LVDS1 is disabled by GNOME according to the display settings set there. VT-switching enables LVDS1 and shows the console. If I switch back to X, I first have to manually enable LVDS1 (xrandr --output LVDS1 --auto) before I can turn it off again (xrandr --output LVDS1
