Upstream marked this as a 'Won't Fix' and therefore I'm marking it a such here as well. They said they don't want to expose these settings in the official preferences. If you do think that it would still be a valuable addition, you could post an idea at Ubuntu Brainstorm

Bug #62529 should be fixed in Karmic meaning you can drag Bookmarks like Home, Documents, Pictures, etc. from 'Places' menu to your Desktop to create links. If Trash is a bookmark you should also be able to drag that to the Desktop. Is dragging from the 'Places' menu to the Desktop obvious
