as well. They said they don't want to expose these settings in the official
preferences.
If you do think that it would still be a valuable addition, you could post an
idea at Ubuntu Brainstorm
This is actually a bug in gnome-control-center, as that is the package that
contains most applications that allow you to set your preferences, including
gnome-appearance-properties. I'm forwarding this upstream to see what the
developers there think of it.

Bug #62529 should be fixed in Karmic meaning you can drag Bookmarks like
Home, Documents, Pictures, etc. from 'Places' menu to your Desktop to
create links.
If Trash is a bookmark you should also be able to drag that to the
Desktop.
