the issue is fixed in karmic, the default im client in jaunty was pidgin
so that bug will probably not get a backport

I have this problem too. I fix it by deleting the "empathy" string at
resource field, and typing a space at the field. apparently, when you
erase it the client put it again. Dont know if this solve the problem,
but worked for me:)

I am facing this again with latest updates on kamric beta from last night. My
existing gtalk account stopped working. So I added a new one, but that still
did not work. I had to manually go into the gtalk account settings and change
the server to talk.google.com and things are now working.
