I'm quite not sure this have to ba fixed, as Ubuntu will not use Gnome
Shell, but Unity, wich use notify-osd. I put back the status to invalid,
as there is no actiivity since lot of month on this bug. please put it
back to new if you still think it should be worked on with Unity coming.

Is there a way now to use gnome-shell with notify osd? I don't like the
notification area gnome-shell has at all...

Ok there was an update and it works now. Banshee doesn't have any
notifications though. That's probably Banshee's fault then?

Yeah, looks like it works fine now (disabling Shell's notification
system so that notify-osd gets used). Not sure what could have fixed it,
but if nobody else is still experimenting this problem I guess this can
be closed.

@Siegfried Gevatter I cant reproduce this with the one in ubuntu
universe but when using gnome-shell daily it uses its own notification
system because when gnome-shell --replace is executed it kills the
default notification system. In other words this bug is fixed.

This isn't visible by default anymore, since GNOME Shell no provides
it's own notification system replacing notify-osd.
However, it may stilll be relevant since users may want to use notify-
osd instead (which they could do disabling Shell's notification system
writing an extension for that).

GNOME shell is not going to be installed by default in Karmic. Only a
preview might be made available via the repository (in universe iirc).
The main desktop environment will be the current GNOME 2.x. That's where
the main development and integration efforts will be spent for notify-
osd. For Karmi
There doesn't seem to be any reason for this to be incomplete. No
