As a side note - I changed to use pristine because of this I vaguely remember.
Pristine works fine AFAIR.

OK. If you can't reproduce it and I can't reproduce it, are you OK with
closing this and your other tickets, then? I don't see how anybody can
do anything about them, really.

Is the git repo publically available? Can you otherwise create a test
case? Did your git repo have a pristine-tar branch (although I don't
think that should matter)?
