This is solved. It was not a kernel problem, but a problem with hal
that caused network manager to think that the hardware switch for
network was alwas turned off.

Update. I have tried using wicd and it works. With wicd I can connect to a
wireless lan.
Now I'm back on network manager, I use it for my 3G network as well.
I'm now convinced that it is not a kernel issue. Shall I close this
report and open another for network manager?
