I managed to fix the problem with:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install nvidia-185-kernel-source
Maybe this will help others here?

Sam problem here.
As someone mentioned in a dupe of this bug not being able to access tty
terminals is a major issue, please resolve this.

have a similar problem on
2.6.31-2-generic #17-Ubuntu SMP x86_64 GNU/Linux (Karmic)
I previously followed http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=622018
and it worked fine (interpid jaunty)
with vga=0x0365 in menu.lst.
in karmic I can't see anything but a blinking cursor at the corner in the

This bug was reported against the linux-meta package when it likely
should have been reported against the linux package instead. We are
automatically transitioning this to the linux kernel package so that the
same thing with stanza:

50% of the times it will fail to get to GDM
