When I have three or four tabs open, I click on the picture and download
it to my /home/pictures/ directory. I get one or two pictures and than
Firefox crashes, I get a black screen and the computer locks up or, I
lose the connection and get kicked back to the desktop.

I'm sorry, apport didn't show up.
I discovered it happens only when selecting /usr/bin/nautilus as the
application to use; choosing, for example, gedit, works flawlessly

You can enable apport for one instance like this:
sudo force_start=1 /etc/init.d/apport restart
I am marking this invalid as apport will open a new bug when the crash
